"Having cancer can be a stressful situation, made more challenging during the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s really important for our Mob that we take particular care of ourselves, stay isolated as much as possible, especially if you are 50 or over and have one or more chronic conditions, and practise social distancing and good hygiene.”

A message from Professor Gail Garvey, proud Kamilaroi woman, Deputy Division Leader of the Wellbeing and Preventable Chronic Diseases division at Menzies and a member of Cancer Australia’s Leadership Group on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Control.

The Menzies cancer team led by Prof Garvey have contributed specialist advice to Cancer Australia for inclusion in a suite of resources produced for people affected by cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It quickly became apparent that there was a gap in information tailored specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people affected by cancer," Prof Garvey said.

“The cancer team are partnering with Cancer Australia to provide information for patients and families and relevant useful links that can help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander during this unprecedented time.

“It’s really important for our mob to keep in touch with their GP or cancer care team at this time."

In addition, a campaign of social media messages and visual aids will be developed by Cancer Australia and disseminated across Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. These messages will also be promoted through Menzies and the National Indigenous Cancer Network (NICaN) social media platforms.
