Conflicts of interest
Menzies takes seriously the need to ensure that researchers and other staff are free of any conflict of interest or other bias, in the course of their work.
Menzies therefore requires all new staff, and all existing staff who have had a change in their circumstances, to complete a conflict of interest declaration.
Any real, perceived or potential conflicts of interest are reviewed by the conflict of interest subcommittee of the Menzies' executive, on a regular basis.
The committee can find that there is no conflict, in which case no action is needed; or the committee can find that there is a real or potential or perceived conflict, and request that an agreed plan be put in place to mitigate that real or potential or perceived conflict.
The committee dealt with a total of 57 declarations of a potential conflict of interest (COI) in 2012, the first year of the policy's implementation.
|General - resolved not to be COI||46|
|Pharmaceutical company-related - resolved not to be COI||9|
|Could be perceived as a COI – management plan in place||1|
|Still under consideration||1|
A total of seven declarations of a potential conflict of interest were received in 2013.
|General - determined not to be COI||2|
|Pharmaceutical company-related - determined not to be COI||1|
|Still under consideration||1 from 2012 (essentially resolved but required further discussion) plus 3 from 2013 (received late in the year)|
