We work with the Timor-Leste Government and partners to strengthen health systems for responding to infectious diseases challenges. Our projects in Timor-Leste have been designed to build capacity in clinical, surveillance and laboratory settings, emphasising the importance of the health system working together to improve response to infectious diseases at both the individual patient and the public health level.

Through these projects, research has been used as a tool to understand epidemiology of disease and investigate the potential impact of changes to the system. Through the work of the Fleming Fund country grant, the work expanded to take on a One Health approach, supporting human health and animal health work to address the challenge of antimicrobial resistance in Timor-Leste. Since 2020, the work of the STRONG TL project expanded significantly to include major support for the response to COVID-19 in Timor-Leste with support from the Australia Government’s Indo-Pacific Centre for Health Security.

In 2021, we implemented another project called ARIA-RISE which is a collaboration between the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance, Menzies and the Timor-Leste Ministry of Health. It aims to provide information about the epidemiology of COVID-19 and other vaccine-preventable diseases by conducting serological surveillance in Timor-Leste. It is also funded by the Indo-Pacific Centre for Health Security.

Our most recent project, MATCH TL, will strengthen diagnosis and surveillance of infectious diseases in Timor-Leste. This project will work closely alongside the Timor-Leste Ministry of Health to improve access to, and quality of, laboratory diagnostic testing for Malaria, Tuberculosis (TB), COVID-19, and HIV.  This collaboration is part of Australia’s commitment to the Global Fund.
