International student, Dr Merita Monteiro graduated with a Master of Public Health in 2023. She plans to pursue a PhD in the area of public health. 

Why did you choose to study public health?

I choose to study public health because I am passionate about improving the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities in my country, Timor-Leste. I believe that Public Health is a powerful tool to help create a healthier and more equitable society. I am also interested in the intersection of public health and policy, and how public health can be used to create positive change. 

Graduating as a public health professional, I can contribute to developing my country that has many public health issues. 

Why did you choose to study through Menzies?

I choose Menzies because Menzies has shown an excellent reputation for providing quality education and training. 

What were the highlights of your studies with Menzies? 

Through Menzies I was able to meet friends from different cultures and have been able to work together. I have also developed my capacity in public health, specifically health research. 

What is your role/position now?

Head of National Institute of Public Health, Timor-Leste. I am proud to be alumni of Menzies School of Health Research.
