Matthew graduated from a Graduate Diploma of Public Health and is currently enrolled in the Master of Public Health at Menzies/CDU.

Why did you choose to study public health?

While working in the hospitals, I began to develop an interest in the underlying factors that impact health and lead to disease within our community. I decided that studying public health would help me to explore these issues further.

Why did you choose to study through Menzies?

I was working in Darwin and was aware of the close collaboration between Menzies and NT Health, with many clinicians in the hospital also participating in research with Menzies. I felt that studying with Menzies would help me join that network, and give me a great understanding of local health issues. From a logistical perspective, Menzies allowed me to study online, and I was also offered a Commonwealth Supported Place.

What were the highlights of your studies with Menzies?

I found the unique perspectives offered by NT-based lecturers to be a highlight, particularly in Indigenous health. Equally, I found the content to be just as relevant when I moved back to Queensland. I also found the online approach to be very flexible which allowed me to fit study around my full time work commitments.

Has your public health qualification opened up career opportunities?

My qualification has allowed me to pursue more public health focused roles within the medical profession. Eventually I hope to complete the formal training program to qualify as a Public Health Physician.

What is your role/position now?

I’m currently working as a Public Health Registrar in one of the Public Health Units in Brisbane.
