Meet Corrine Butler.

A proud Aboriginal woman with strong family connections to Yarrabah, far north Queensland, Corrine is committed to improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

She is also one of the next generation of researchers at Menzies School of Health Research.

The Charles Darwin University graduate was recently awarded the Menzies 2022 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Postgraduate Coursework Scholarship

"I've always been interested in completing further studies, since completing my Occupational Therapy degree from James Cook University in 2009,” said Corrine, who also joined the Indigenous Allied Health Association (IAHA) in 2009 as a fourth year Occupational Therapy student.

Menzies Education awards scholarship assistance to outstanding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in Charles Darwin University’s postgraduate public health and health research courses.

The scholarship will support Corrine to complete her Master of Health Research.

“The Master of Health Research offers advanced knowledge and skills in health research. The skills that I will gain, such as planning and implementing a substantial research project, will equip me with the skills necessary to achieve my career goal of completing a PhD.”

In her application, Corrine demonstrated significant achievements in the academic and employment areas, extra-curricular activities, as well as a commitment to improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

“I've appreciated all of the support the tutors, lectures and my supervisors have given through Menzies School of Health Research,” she said. “I look forward to continuing my study at Menzies School of Heath Research.”

Corrine has more than 12 years’ experience delivering occupational therapy services in a wide range of areas, including mental health, community and population health.

She is co-founder of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Occupational Therapy Network, and has worked as an Occupational Therapist in regional and remote areas across Queensland and the Northern Territory.

She was previously awarded the 2020 Menzies Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Postgraduate Coursework Scholarship to complete the Graduate Diploma of Health Research part time. Corrine successfully completed the Graduate Diploma of Health Research in December 2021.

“I highly encourage other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to consider applying for the Menzies 2023 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Postgraduate Coursework Scholarship," Corrine said.
