Seeing firsthand the importance of ensuring access to health care services for all led Julie Mae Malcampo to enrol in a Master of Public Health with Menzies.

Julie has a Bachelor of Nursing from Davao Doctors College and is a registered nurse in the Philippines. During her time as a nurse, she witnessed many people in the community who were unable to afford minimal treatments from healthcare facilities. This prompted her to pursue a career in public health.

“I think that it is essential for everyone to have access to health care services. By taking up public health, I will have the necessary knowledge and skill set to solve these problems and fulfil my passion of improving people’s lives especially for those who are unable to seek medical treatment or assistance due to lack of resources,” Julie says.

Julie started her degree three months ago and is enjoying the holistic approach to public health the course offers.

“The Master of Public Health enables me to learn more about health issues not only in clinical settings but also global health issues, policies and cultural determinant factors. I believe that by studying this course, we are able to provide a holistic approach in addressing health issues,” Julie says.

“Menzies School of Health Research has been a leading research institute in Australia and I strongly believe that with their expertise, they can shape students into becoming future leaders in the health industry.”

Following her degree, Julie intends to conduct research on healthcare systems back in the Philippines.

“As COVID-19 spreads through different regions, it is highlighting the strengths and weaknesses within our healthcare systems in general. The knowledge and skills I have learned will allow me to positively influence the condition of public health by actively guiding the policies and programs aimed towards the public health sector.”
