MEDIA RELEASE | Funding ‘REACT’ion: Menzies PhD student receives NHMRC Scholarship

    Date

A prestigious NHMRC scholarship has been recently awarded to Menzies PhD student, Dr Emma Smith, to tackle tuberculosis in the Top End.

TB incidence in Australia is low but TB remains a preventable cause of morbidity and mortality among First Nations Australians. However, this can be avoided if active TB is detected and treated earlier before it has caused damage and spread to others, and TB infection (latent TB) is cured before it becomes active, by ensuring people who have been in contact with TB are screened for infection and those infected complete preventive treatment.

The REACT project aims to stop the ongoing transmission of tuberculosis (TB) in Top End remote Aboriginal communities and reduce the impact of TB on those affected.

The project will develop, implement and evaluate a package of measures aimed at both the community and health system response to TB in participating communities in the Northern Territory’s Top End.

REACT will:

  • Empower TB-affected communities to shape the response to TB,
  • Increase entry into and retention within the cascade of care for TB preventive treatment,
  • Improve the use of routine screening and diagnostic tests for TB disease in primary and tertiary care centres, and
  • Enhance capacity for patient-centred primary care management of TB.
