This study set out to describe the characteristics, patterns of health service usage and morbidity and mortality outcomes of those who attended a hospital in the Northern Territory for attempted suicide and/or deliberate self-harm between 2000 and 2012. The study of hospital admissions and of presentations in hospital emergency departments and of subsequent utilisation of community health and mental health services aimed to help to identify those most at risk of premature death by suicide and inform the design of initiatives to improve discharge practices and follow-up care for those who attended hospital for attempted suicide and/or deliberate self-harm.

Aims:
  • To analyse health outcomes and causes of death for persons presenting to NT hospitals for deliberate self-harm and/or attempted suicide from 2000-2012
  • To identify characteristics of those at risk of repeat self-harm and death by suicide or other causes in order to improve discharge planning and targeted provision of preventive follow-up care by the primary health care community mental health sectors
  • In partnership with primary health care and community mental health service providers, to investigate and describe health service utilisation of Indigenous cases in the study by place of service provision to identify any association between levels of care provided and health outcomes of clients and, further, to identify opportunities to provide improved community-based care
  • To engage in collaborative research translation and dissemination activity with project partners.
