At Menzies and CDU we have been looking at what happens to Indigenous students in the NT as they move through school.

The Story of our Children and Young People is a report that will provide a comprehensive picture of the wellbeing of Northern Territory children. It will include baseline data, at regional level, against key indicators of social progress. It will also contain positive stories of activities that support the development and cultural identity of children and young people in the Northern Territory.

The Story was a recommendation from the Expert Reference Panel for the development of the NT Government Early Childhood Development plan, Starting Early for Better Futures. The NT Government has committed to update the Story every two years.

The Story will be framed using the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth’s The Nest. The Nest’s six outcome areas have been developed through consultation across the country. The outcome areas are: being loved and safe, having material basics, being healthy, learning, participating and a positive sense of culture and identity. A positive sense of culture and identity underpins, and is fundamental to, the five other outcome areas.

The Story will lay the foundation for future planning and actions to improve outcomes for children, young people and families.

The Story will be prepared by the CCDE, under the direction of an independent Editorial Committee and in collaboration with the Department of the Chief Minister.
