The Story of Our Children and Young People (the Story) is a report that provides a comprehensive picture of the wellbeing of Northern Territory children and young people. It includes data, at regional level, against key indicators of child and youth wellbeing. It also contains positive stories of activities that support the development and cultural identity of children and young people in the Northern Territory.

The Story was a recommendation from the Expert Reference Panel for the development of the NT Government Early Childhood Development plan, Starting Early for Better Future. The NT Government accepted the recommendation and has committed to update the Story every two years.

The first Story was published in November 2019, with the second edition due to be published in October 2021.

The Story is framed using the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth’s The Nest. The Nest’s six outcome areas have been developed through consultation across the country. The outcome areas are: being loved and safe, having material basics, being healthy, learning, participating and a positive sense of identity and culture.

The Story lays the foundation for planning and actions to improve outcomes for children, young people and families.

The Story is prepared by the CCDE, under the direction of an independent Editorial Committee and in partnership with the Department of the Chief Minister and Cabinet.
