This project will pilot and evaluate the What Matters 2 Adults (WM2A) tool in the context of renal care in the Top End region of the Northern Territory. The project team will collaborate with renal patients and health staff to identify the risks, barriers and enablers to using the WM2A tool in the local context, including determining the most appropriate mechanism and if modifications are needed.

The objectives of this project are to:
  1. Collaboratively engage with renal patients and service providers to assess if the WM2A tool is appropriate for the local context, if modifications are needed to use the tool as a PROM within Renal Services, and how the tool could be administered in an accessible way.
  2. Pilot the WM2A within Renal Services in the Top End and identify enablers, challenges and risks to implementing the tool.
  3. Formatively evaluate if the WM2A tool meets the needs of patients and service providers in terms of: informing clinical decision making; contributing to continuous quality improvement; and foregrounding patient-centred care.

The project will be conducted in three phases over two years -

Phase 1: Collaborative stakeholder engagement. This phase will involve workshops/yarning circles with patients and semi-structured interviews/workshops with staff from the Aboriginal Health and Diversity Directorate, Quality and Safety Unit and renal services to assess if the WM2A tool is appropriate for the local context. Workshops will also explore patient views on administering the tool, including frequency of delivery and ways data could be collected, language and translation requirements, and how to manage anonymity and confidentiality.
Phase 2: Piloting WM2A in Renal Services. This phase will involve piloting the WM2A tool and assessing the delivery mode and making modifications where necessary.
Phase 3: Formative evaluation of the pilot. This phase will involve a formative evaluation of the pilot project and if the WM2A tool has the potential to meet the needs of patients and service providers in terms of: informing clinical decision making; contributing to continuous quality improvement; and foregrounding patient-centred care.

The expected outcomes of this project are to:
  1. Determine if the WM2A tool is appropriate for administering within Top End Renal Services and how the tool may be administered in an accessible way.
  2. Identify enablers, challenges and risks to implementing the tool by piloting within Renal Services.
  3. Determine if the WM2A tool meets the needs of patients and service providers in terms of: informing clinical decision making; contributing to continuous quality improvement; and foregrounding patient-centred care.

Ultimately, the project intends to inform how NT Health Renal Services measure and respond to patient wellbeing to improve the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
