Who'd wanna listen to me? The humble genius of Dr. G. Yunupingu(ABC )

Dr G Yunupingu was born blind and grew up in the remote community of Galiwinku on Elcho Island.

He was a self-taught musician, playing a right handed guitar with his left hand.

He went on to become Australia’s highest selling Indigenous artist.

You might know his solo work, or perhaps his role in Saltwater band, but did you know he had already toured the world with Yothu Yindi before that?

Mark Grose from the record label Skinnyfish talks about the days when Dr G Yunupingu was known as a drummer and about Dr G’s reluctance to try a solo album.
He also talks about Dr G Yunupingu’s final thank you to his friend and long-time collaborator Michael Hohnen.

Also included in this audio is a conversation with Dr Paul Lawton, a specialist who treated Dr G Yunupingu, and who says his famous sense of humour made it in to Royal Darwin  Hospital.
