The 2013/14 Kickstart A Champion for Change Appeal raised over $30 000 to support an Indigenous trainee. A rigorous recruitment process with our partner Group Training NT was undertaken and we welcomed Shennelle Waters to the Menzies School of Health Research in the Child Health Division.
Darwin born, Shennelle Waters had always fostered a keen interest for science and its practical applications making her an easy fit with the Menzies family.
Shennelle is currently training in the field of microbiology and assisting with Menzies’ IHEARBETA study into Indigenous children with chronic suppurative otitis media as part of her Certificate III in Laboratory Skills.
Shennelle was also a key part of the LifeLab mobile science outreach program delivered to more than 750 Territorians as part of National Science Week 2014.
Shennelle reflects enthusiastically on her experience so far and her plans for the future.
“The traineeship is a fantastic initiative. I love working here, I love the people here and I would like to stay with Menzies into the future.”
