OPTIONS FOR CONTRACTOR LICENCING

Master Builders has started work on what we think the new model for contractor licencing in the NT should look like.  This follows the release by Minister Lawler of a number of discussion papers earlier this year on licencing, continuous professional development for licenced contractors, and peer review of some structural design activities.

Master Builders submission subsequently encouraged the Territory Government to consider a number of key issues.

First, how to licence those businesses that move consistently between residential and commercial projects, without adding too much complexity and double effort.  Next, how to align the qualifications for both forms of licencing.  And then finally, how to minimise any unintended consequences for businesses operating in regional and remote settings.

It is now time to start to drill down into the detail on those issues.  If you have any thoughts or concerns, then get in contact with Dave Malone in our Office on 89229666.

LAND SUPPLY NOMINATIONS

The Board of Master Builders has nominated Andrea Moriarty (Zuccoli Homes) and Danielle Laffy (Bendella Homes) onto the Reference Committee for the Land Development Review.

This Review is being led by Dick Guit and will look at options that Government might consider to better align the demand and supply for titled land in the residential space.

We have also had a couple of conversations with Dick who has indicated that he is very keen to hear from anyone with suggestions on reforming the land supply system in the NT.

CONGRATULATIONS JAHDAI VIGONA

Each year Master Builders sponsors the indigenous award at the Group Training NT annual awards.

Our congratulations go out to Jahdai Vigona who took out both the ATSI Trainee or Apprentice of the Year, and the Trainee of the Year at the GTNT Group Awards last week.  Jahdai started working with Menzies in the Mental Health Research Team and later joined the Alcohol, Other Drugs and Gambling Team.

Jahdai is passionate about dedicating his work to improve the social and emotional health, and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in his community on the Tiwi Islands, and for all first nations people nationally.

CERT IV UNDERWAY

The 2021 intake for our Certificate IV in Building and Construction had their first lectures last weekend.  This year there are 20 people embarking on a qualification which is one of the pre-requisites for securing a residential building licence in the NT.

We also wanted to acknowledge the great support from the Territory Government which provides a significant subsidy to every one of those students to encourage more licenced contractors into our industry.

And thanks to Master Builders Queensland, our registered training organisation, for their continued support of training in the NT.

IT’S INSURANCE TIME

As we head to the end of this financial year, most businesses are considering the cost and scope of their insurance renewals.  From what we hear about those numbers already, things are not looking so good.  Prices and limitations on insurance are both increasing substantially.

Master Builders Insurance Brokers (MBIB) is the national Master Builders movements’ specialist construction insurance broker.  If you need any help or assistance, then do not hesitate in giving them a call.  It could make the world of difference, especially as they have the horsepower and expertise to support building and construction businesses like few others.

TIME TO CRACK ON FOR AWARDS

It is just a couple of weeks now until entries close for this year’s Excellence in Building and Construction Awards on 11 June.  We can see that entries are starting to flow in via our Awards Platform, but we also thought it might be useful to provide a gentle reminder to those members who have not yet started.

And remember, award categories are not just for projects.  There are categories for apprentices, Young Builder of the Year, Women in Construction and supplier and sub-contractor of the year.

If you would like to talk about those awards, or need some assistance with your entry, then get in contact with Lisa in our Office on 89229666.

GENERAL CONSTRUCTION MEETING

The next quarterly meeting for all members operating in the general construction sector will be held next Wednesday lunchtime from 12 Noon.  If you haven’t registered already, then click on this link to register now.

Our special guest will be Adam Walding from DIPL, who has taken over from John Harrison as General Manager for Construction.

This is a great opportunity to talk directly with DIPL about matters in our industry as well as fellow members. This is a free event, but registration is required for catering purposes.
